I think this is a campus wide issue. In fact, this may be a globally
wide issue. Self empowerment through forms of speech; sounds like
something every social conversation, no pun intended, needs right now. I could see how the personal anecdote could mask what the writer is really trying to say, but I suggest you read it again and look at what the personal story is trying to say about the larger issue.

Thanks for the feedback — I'll try to address your question. We run editorials about student issues, as well as a lot of campus news content, every week. True, this piece is not directly related to campus-wide issues — though I have written plenty of columns that are — but I tried to structure it in a way that it would offer advice and insight (whether it's worthwhile advice and insight is up to the reader to decide). The last two paragraphs are nothing short of a call to action, and I think encouraging people to use their voices can very much be related to student issues. Sometimes it's effective to use outside anecdotes from one's own life to relate to a bigger subject. To be honest, though, it is a constant struggle of mine to balance personality and relevance.

Also, as a "student working for studenss," might I suggest you get into the habit of proofreading your own comments, especially if you're critiquing someone else's work?
