A year ago, one of my closest friends returned from a trip to the British Virgin Islands organized by the head of the UCSC sailing department, Rusty Kingon. She came back with countless stories, amazing friends and an enviable winter tan. Naturally, that was more than enough to convince me to push through the required courses and get myself a spot on the annual winter break trip. For more than a week we sailed through the BVI, exploring islands, snorkeling in coral reefs, and swimming with lionfish and sea turtles along the way.

“I don’t think it should be a factor, because it doesn’t tell how they’ll lead or how they’ll run a city, or country or whatever. So it doesn’t really make sense to judge them by it.”
Zach Simon
Third-year, Porter
Biochemistry, Molecular biology & Theater arts

“Yeah, I think it is important, because someone’s personal life says a lot about their ethics and their moral values when it comes to something like that. So if they’re not morally ethical in their personal life, I wouldn’t trust someone to run my country.”

“Yes I do — I think it should be. I mean, if they’re a politician, they’re going to be working with things. Personal life always does end up affecting things in the long run, and it’s an important part of a person.”

“Well I don’t smoke [cigarettes], so it doesn’t affect me, but my friends who do smoke are upset. I think people will smoke anyways — secretly … Weed is banned on campus and people smoke that all the time.”

Brittany Hopkins
Merrill, fourth-year
psychology

“When you walk through Kresge, there is always somebody smoking because it’s really no big deal. If they ban [tobacco], though, people will be more upset than happy. I feel like students will protest — especially here.”

Roxanne Kaplan
Kresge, first-year
undeclared

“Well, that won’t fly well. I don’t smoke, but I believe people have a right to do so. It’s bad for your health, and I love my lungs. But if people want to destroy their lungs, they have a right to. It’s a stupid rule and it won’t fly.”

Daniel Hoisch
Porter, first-year
proposed literature

“I don’t smoke, so I have no disposition to approve and it’s not a problem for me. [But] it’s not effective to tell people what they can and can’t do. They’ll take it down. There will be too many complaints and there is such a large [smoking] population. Time will tell.”

Ivan Quintero
Crown, fourth-year
chemistry

“A lot of bio majors are going to be pulling their hair out around finals time. I mean, you hear students offering $1 for a cigarette all the time around finals. It’s not good for your health, but we’re lucky to have such an open campus where there is plenty of space. Students now can barely make it through an hour and 45-minute class without smoking. They just can’t wait to get their fix. It’ll be pretty bad for those students who are addicted, but a lot of students start smoking their first year, so for future classes as long as you don’t start — because you can’t start — that will be good for you.”

Keri Kekkonen
Merrill, fourth-year
neuroscience

“At a [junior college] in San Diego, the students voted [on a no-tobacco policy], and it still went through. But that campus is small and it’s not a big deal to just step off [campus]. Here, you’d have to take a bus. I don’t think it’s fair. It’s an imposition on our liberties and freedoms. I don’t think it will be effective at all. Rating its effectiveness will be a matter of ticketing students — they may make some money, but that won’t stop smoking on campus. Especially for the students who live on campus — they’re 18, they have rights. It all comes down to liberties. We pay to come to this school. I’m a 27-year-old student and I deserve freedom of choice at the very least. If [the UCs] want to corral me and smokers into a little smoking area, I can accept that. The current rule is no smoking within 20 feet of any doors or windows, and I don’t mind that. I’m a courteous smoker, I don’t smoke around children or people eating — it’s just a courtesy issue. Smokers are aware of this and they know how it affects the people around them. Most smokers don’t like littering and will use an ashtray to dispose their butts. If [the UCs] remove the ashtrays, what choice do we have? I can’t carry a butt with me into class. The policy won’t change people — people will continue to smoke.”

When I was growing up, my mom spent a lot of time flying, and was away from home for a couple of days to a week at a time. Although it appeared to be a luxury to travel and wander around new cities, she constantly reminded me it is her job.

My mom is a flight attendant who travels to a variety of places on a schedule that is not very consistent. Recently, I got to accompany her on a layover in Seattle, Wash. When I met her in Washington, she showed me Pike’s Market, the Space Needle, the wharf, and the shopping district in the city. As the day ended, we went back to the hotel for the night, but my mom did not get to relax. Instead was preparing for a trip to Fairbanks, Ala. and would return to Seattle in the same night.

Through what my mom showed me in Seattle, I captured part of the flight attendant experience. As flight attendants travel they evolve into unique transient locals to the cities they visit, with knowledge of the hidden treasures and treats. However, sometimes after a long flight it’s appealing to spend the day relaxing in a hotel room and catching up on missed sleep. The flight attendant lifestyle is about the all too short layovers that introduce a city, but never give enough time to get completely comfortable in one place before departing for the next.

Thousands of individuals marched and succeeded in shutting down the port of Oakland yesterday, Nov. 2. The port of Oakland is the fifth busiest port in the United States, and nearly one hundred of semi trucks sat idle, unable to pick up or drop off their containers. The actions throughout the day resulted in numerous business closures, including Wells Fargo, and culminated in the crowd of more than five thousand shutting down the ports in the evening. Factions of the Occupy movement broke off and blocked various ports. The march to the ports saw hundreds of critical mass bicyclists and 300 teachers from the Oakland Unified School District. This day of action follows last week’s police raid where Scott Olsen, a 24-year-old Iraq War veteran, was hospitalized after being struck in the head by a projectile during the raid. Police presence during the day was minimal until around midnight, when numerous police officers weilding guns filled with rubber bullets approached 14th and Broadway.

Recently I was given the opportunity to accompany a College Eight Core Course on a field trip to Fort Ord Natural Reserve, which, according to their website, “was created from 600 acres of the former army base on the Monterey Peninsula. Fort Ord Natural Reserve gives students, scientists, and the general public a chance “to learn about rare species and habitats, land management, and conservation biology.” The field trip gave freshman students a chance to learn about the resources UCSC has to offer and about the specific ecosystem of the Fort Ord Natural Reserve. Personally, the field trip gave me the chance to see new UCSC students grow closer to one another and bond over an experience unique to their class. It was inspiring, especially in today’s technology-driven world, to see them do some hands-on work and come out smiling at the end of the day.

Occupy Santa Cruz (OSC) activists have held their post at the courthouse steps for nearly 25 days now. They have several tables lined with occupation literature and are easily visible to anyone traveling down Water Street. Their ideals resonate with most people who pass by and throughout the day drivers will shout and honk in support. It is also common to see pedestrians interrupt their walks to curiously approach the site where they engage in dialogue with occupiers, which sometimes results in them holding up a sign and helping out.

Open to new members as well as old, OSC holds daily general assemblies to discuss strategies, progress and to address the concerns of members and citizens. At these meetings, people take turns discussing issues and produce solutions that are voted on and recorded.

Not only do they listen to each other, but they regulate themselves as well. If a member of the group disrupts a meeting or acts inappropriately, members will band together to approach that person nonviolently and either convince them to stop or make them leave.

Self-regulation does not ease tensions with the police, though. Officers occasionally come by with digital cameras to monitor the occupation and have made threats of raiding the camp for drugs and other illegal items. Occupy sites in Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose have already been subject to raids, leading to many arrests. It seems that a raid in Santa Cruz is imminent, but the OSC members are aware of mounting governmental pressure and have discussed plans of action in the case of a raid.

As time passes, the movement only grows stronger; eventually the 1 percent will be forced to confront everyone else.

The Chinese drama “Empire of Silver” brings excitement and intensity to viewers as they watch history, action and drama work together in the film. The film is set in China’s Shanxi province, 1899. This was a pivotal point in Chinese history when modernity began to rise in spite of the Qing Dynasty’s struggle to maintain power.

Aaron Kwok stars as Third Master, the new heir to the banking empire of his father, Master Kang. Resistant to his father’s harsh way of ruling, Third Master must adapt to his new power, which lays in contrast to his sensitive personality.

“Empire of Silver” covers an economic turning point in history that is fairly reminiscent of the current Occupy Wall Street movement.

As civilians rebel against the Third Master and his family, the intensity and brutality of this historical period is graphically evident. Violence, as well as battle scenes, illustrate how much physical brutality marked the revolt that would draw the line between two separate eras in Chinese history.

While the dialogue and action bring excitement to the film, the cinematography is one of the most, if not the most, noteworthy elements in the film. Shooting the film in 13 different cities, director Christina Yao makes the most of a tight budget with incredible scenery and camera work.

Besides the historical elements of the film, drama within the empire stays central with tragic events, father-and-son conflicts and love affairs. Third Master constantly tries to keep his identity separate from his father’s, which creates a struggle between the two throughout the whole movie.

Third Master falls in love with his beautiful stepmother, played by Hao Lei, amplifying the tension between Third Master and his father. The love affair plot line keeps the film from being overwhelmed with violence or history. It also brings emotion to the movie, drawing viewers more into the characters’ lives.

Yao gives viewers a glimpse of China during the Qing Dynasty in a detailed manner, which makes the big theater experience even more enjoyable.

For the first time in decades, people witnessed and recorded on video Chinese border agents killing Tibetan refugees. In his documentary “Murder in the Snow,” director Mark Gould makes sure audience members appreciate the fact that the film even exists, because as the mountaineers explain, the original video footage had to be smuggled out of the country.

This documentary recounts the experience of a group of mountaineers who witnessed Chinese border patrol officers shoot a group of Tibetan pilgrims as they attempted to escape to Nepal through the Mt. Cho Oyu region. This is a great film for anyone interested in human rights issues or anyone considering a trip to the region.

It was on Sept. 30, 2006, that the lives of 100 mountaineers and a group of Tibetan pilgrims were forever changed.

“I immediately knew that somebody was going to die, and I turned to the clients and said, ‘you don’t wanna watch this,’” said the mountaineers trekking guide, Luis Benitez, as the group looked on in horror towards the escalating violence.

Gould frames the story within the experiences of those whom the event affected most: the Tibetans and the mountaineers. Piecing almost every detail of the story together using interviews from the mountaineers, Tibetan pilgrims, human rights activists, journalists and Chinese officials, “Murder int he Snow” is a gripping tale of loss, survival and the cost of freedom.

“Murder in the Snow” uses original footage taken by one of the mountaineers who happened to be a photojournalist, which makes the film even more compelling because audience members are shown primary source material, allowing them to come to their own conclusions about the political and religious issues Tibetans face every day.

Video footage shot by photojournalist Sergiu Matei, one of the 100 mountaineers, shows the Tibetans collapsing one by one after each AK-47 gunshot is heard in the background. Matei’s voice is also heard on the video as he says, “Fuck, they’re shooting them like dogs.”
