Although I can’t say for sure what brought us together, I’ll bet the stoic reader on my right is on hiatus from his death metal-loving, electric guitar-playing roommate, who—doesn’t it always workout this way?—happens to be nocturnal. And I don’t know why the man with the beard is passed out on the couch, but he’s certainly much better company than the stoic reader’s roommate. Regardless the reason, we all need a break sooner or later. And lucky for you, campus provides seversal quiet spots for all of your roommate-avoiding, consciousness-escaping endeavors.
McHenry Library
It was on the third floor of McHenry library, between Odious Debts and Race To Save The Tropics, that I found my solitude. I’m not sure what I love most: the buzzing overhead lights, producing white noise that lulled me to sleep, the artificially-conditioned air in the midst of a heat wave, or the cushy chairs facing scenic views. The four floors include large desks and many computer stations. McHenry library, with its fortress-like array of bookshelves, allows for numerous quiet places to study or just simply to zone out with a book.
Kresge Study Center
So hidden that you could go an entire Kresge College career without knowing about it, The Kresge Study Center is a studious student’s treat, with many interlocking coves to study in and large bay windows with oversized chairs in which to admire the forested serenity.
Page Smith Library
Large stained-glass windows paint this study spot in a multicolored light. Located in the middle of Cowell College, the Page Smith Library is a quiet and comfortable place to study. The library offers large desks to stretch your project out as well as many places to just sit and read. Private desks wedged between the bookshelves provide a more secluded studying experience.
Stevenson College Library
Tall vaulted ceilings and large windows make this spot, secluded in the center of Stevenson College, a cozy place to study. Since construction is virtually complete, the new school year will offer less noise for this college library. The building’s removed location is perfect for quiet study sessions.
Science and Engineering Library
Two glorious floors of study spot pleasure. The Science and Engineering Library offers Mac and PC labs within its newly built walls. The bottom two floors provide many large desks, comfortable chairs and large windows, overlooking the surrounding redwoods. Perched atop Science Hill, this spot provides a rewarding studying experience.
Bill Bonema Study Center
Located at beautiful Porter College, the Bill Bonema Study Center is a comfortable place to study, although most students seem to just kick back and take a nap. The center, which is directly next to the Koi Pond, offers many desk areas and an array of comfy couches to stretch out on. The study center has a Mac computer lab with free printing for Porter students. If you seek a good study session at almost any hour of the night, visit the Bill Bonema Study Center.
Academic Resource Center (ARC)
Built conveniently in a ‘nowhere-land,’ somewhere between The Music Center and McHenry Library, the ARCenter is the savvy studier’s best-kept secret. The outside tables allow one to gaze across the hills of lower campus whilst contemplating the finer points of your upcoming midterm. And if studying makes you hungry, duck inside the former ARC café and help yourself to the three vending machines.
