The Walnut Avenue Women’s Center and other concerned community members rallied to spare childcare from state budget cuts

Single mothers across campus have found themselves with little support, due to disbanded groups, budget cuts and the reduction of services for parents over the last decade. Despite challenges, the women strive to give their children a good life and a bright future.

Even with the current budget crisis, the state’s inability to decide what to cut and how much to take is unforgivable. Now by cutting childcare, not only is the state hurting families in need, it is taking away jobs from those in the industry.
The Preschool Center at the Granary, located at the base of campus, feels more like a home than a place children go to spend the day away from their parents. Yet as of this January 1, 2010, the preschool, as well as child care services for UC Santa Cruz faculty and staff, will no longer exist.
