The City of Santa Cruz lost two police officers on Feb. 26. This is the first time in history a Santa Cruz police officer has been killed in the line of duty.

We were not the only ones stunned by the pictures of 20 recently-murdered six- and seven-year-olds and six adults, which appeared on our television screens last month. We were not the only ones silently imagining the horror that took place in Sandy Hook Elementary School when a disturbed young man took up a weapon and killed for inexplicable reasons. We were not the only ones looking for an appropriate response to this tragedy.

In light of the Tucson shooting, many have interpreted the incident as a gaping hole in domestic gun control law. Calls for change and action have rippled across the nation. Yet precisely what change means and how it should be implemented are not entirely clear-cut.

Texas legislature will soon vote on a bill that would legalize concealed handguns on college campus. They should think rationally and shoot down this bill.
