After a rough start to the season, the UC Santa Cruz women’s basketball team rebounded to win against Occidental College 63–62 on Jan. 7, riding captain Ryane Ortiz’s career-high 23 points to a close victory.

The Slugs suffered two straight losses this week in the Hampton Inn Classic at UCSC. After winning three games to start their season, the Slugs look to return their winning ways quickly after a hot start to the 2012-2013 basketball season.
UCSC Women’s Basketball lost 75-68 to Holy Names University. But the news isn’t all bad for the young slugs team, as freshman center Sarah Mackey shows promise in blocking shots.
Winter is coming, and with the changing of the seasons, the UCSC athletic seasons are also changing. The soccer teams have kicked off their off-seasons and the sun has set on women’s volleyballs’ bumping and spiking. But men’s and women’s basketball have tipped off with all the promise a new beginning brings.
