Candidate Profile: Shaz Umer
By Laurel Fujii

First-year Shaz Umer is running for reelection as SUA Merrill College representative.

The earth sciences major said many believe Merrill is a quiet community but has a wide range of diversity to offer. Umer wants to get Merrill students more involved and break the “sterile Merrill” stereotype.

He said he wishes students had a more centralized location to gather and come together, and expressed interest in the amphitheater behind Quarry Plaza. He noted Quarry Plaza is far for the colleges on the west side of campus and wants a place where more students can rally and protest.

Umer is dedicated to raising students’ awareness of SUA and budget cuts and how students are affected by the cuts. He said it’s important for students to vote in state elections and lobby for what they want.

Umer speaks with experience, as he worked on the “Get Out the Vote” campaign, lobbied in Washington D.C., and has met with Republican and Democratic politicians on local, state and national levels.
