Permanent Camp for the Houseless Proposed
High school teacher Stacy Falls and filmmaker Brent Adams are working together to create an alternative solution for houselessness in Santa Cruz. However, before they can establish their vision for a permanent campground for up to 50 houseless people, Adams and Falls must gain support from the community and its leaders.
Board of Supervisors Approve $25 Million Jail Expansion Proposal
The Santa Cruz Board of Supervisors approved the proposal presented by local jail officials asking for a $24.8 million state grant. Santa Cruz County Jail officials are asking for the grant in order to add more beds and job training programs as well as reduce recidivism rates at Rountree Detention Center — a medium-security jail in Watsonville.
Over 50 enthusiastic Santa Cruzans paddled along the San Lorenzo River in kayaks and canoes on Oct. 12. A city ordinance enacted in 1985 would typically prohibit this type of activity, but the recent River Paddle event served as an opportunity for residents to re-evaluate the river as a recreational area.
