Fire Near Hahn Ruled as Arson

A fire that was ignited in a ravine below Hahn Student Services was the most recent in a series of fires on or near campus. The fire took place on Oct. 9 and was responded to at 2:40 p.m. UCSC chief-of police Nader Oweis said a Cal Fire investigator found that the fire was caused by arson.

A Sliver of Change for Native American Women

Santa Cruz police responded to the second residential explosion involving the production of butane hash oil (BHO) within a 10 day timespan. This recent incident occurred at 1:24 p.m. on Oct. 9th at 128 Walk Circle.

In Memoriam: Kayla Hallee

Merrill student Kayla Hallee’s body was found off the coast of Santa Barbara on Aug. 27. The 20-year-old was at the cusp of her third year at UCSC after taking a leave of absence during the 2012-2013 school year. Hallee would have returned to UCSC in the fall as an environmental studies major.

Explosion Southeast of Downtown Santa Cruz

On Sunday, September 29 at 1:25 P.M., the Santa Cruz Fire and Police Departments raced to an apartment building ravaged by fire in the 700 block of Third Street. Three male victims who had been severely burned were rescued and rushed by helicopter to a trauma center in the area.

Fire Near College Eight

UCSC campus police responded to a call regarding a fire near College Eight on Sunday Oct. 6. The fire was called in anonymously at 3:17 a.m. and five departments including the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Santa Cruz Fire Department and the Scott’s Valley’s Fire Department responded.
